Inter Milan in talks to sign Tottenham captain Cristian Romero

Inter Milan have entered talks with Tottenham over the potential signing of centre-back and captain Cristian Romero, according to multiple reports. Inter's sporting director Piero Ausilio confirmed the club's interest, telling Sky Italy: "It's definitely a deal we are trying to sign with the player and the club. These things take some time but there's definitely interest."

The 28-year-old Argentina international, who helped his country reach a second straight World Cup final this month, has made 156 appearances for Tottenham since joining in 2021. However, a difficult 2025-26 season saw him serve four separate suspensions, and he missed the end of the campaign with a knee injury. Spurs have bolstered their defensive options by signing Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton for £52m and Marcos Senesi on a free transfer, leading to expectations that Romero will depart this summer.

Reports from transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, cited by Football365, state that "it's over" between Romero and Tottenham, with the club ready to let him go. Inter are pushing to conclude the deal "within 10 days," though the finances remain complex—Romero is under contract until 2029. Barcelona are also interested, but only if they sell a defender first. Additionally, Arsenal have been linked but no formal approach is confirmed.

Tottenham head coach Roberto De Zerbi has indicated the club's transfer business is not finished. Alongside Romero's potential exit, Inter also hold interest in Spurs full-back Djed Spence, though that move has lost momentum. Spurs have already spent £237m on Sandro Tonali, Mateus Fernandes, and Van Hecke, while also adding Andy Robertson and Martin Dubravka on free transfers.
