David Jonsson Cast as T'Challa's Son in 'Black Panther 3' at Comic-Con

Ryan Coogler announced at San Diego Comic-Con 2026 that David Jonsson will star as the new Black Panther in 'Black Panther 3,' playing Prince T'Challa II, the son of T'Challa. The film is set for release on December 15, 2028, and will be the third installment in the franchise that began with 2018's 'Black Panther' starring the late Chadwick Boseman.

Jonsson, known for 'Alien: Romulus' and 'The Long Walk,' stepped out to a standing ovation at Hall H. 'I want to say thank you so much,' he said. 'Thank you Ryan, thank you Kevin [Feige], thank you to this amazing family that I have the honor and the privilege and the blessing to join.' Coogler described the character as coming of age, having been introduced as a child in the 2022 sequel 'Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.'

The announcement confirms that the sequel will follow Prince T'Challa II as he matures and eyes the Wakandan crown. Coogler also revealed that 'Black Panther 3' will be shot entirely on larger format celluloid film, a first for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film joins a slate of upcoming Marvel projects including 'Avengers: Doomsday' and 'Ironheart.'

David Jonsson's casting marks a new chapter for the franchise, which faced the challenge of continuing after Boseman's death. Letitia Wright and Winston Duke, who played Shuri and M'Baku, also appeared on stage at Comic-Con. The film's December 2028 release date places it as one of Marvel's most anticipated upcoming titles.
